Lifestyle Changes to Combat Anxiety
Anxiety.
While hardly a new concept, it is definitely on the rise and has been for the past couple of years. It’s a feeling of fear, worry, and uneasiness. While it can occur with mild to more severe symptoms, the feeling of dread that can accompany this condition paralyzes some of its sufferers. In fact, the National Institute of Mental Health reports that anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., and it affects nearly one-third of adults at some point in their lives.
While the disorder can affect anyone, certain factors increase risk such as genetics and traumatic experiences. Treatment may be needed when anxiety becomes so severe that it interferes with daily life. This may include a combination of medication and lifestyle changes. Here are 5 lifestyle changes that can help combat anxiety:
Reduce Caffeine and Alcohol Intake
As stimulants, caffeine and alcohol can make your anxiety worse. It may not be easy to cut back on these beverages on your own, so talk with your doctor if needed about medication and other options to help quit or reduce your intake.
Balance Your Diet
There’s a saying that “you are what you eat.” Choosing healthy, nutritious food options and staying hydrated helps your mind and body function at their best. This can help you reduce stress and better cope with challenging situations. Limit sugar as it can also increase anxiety.
Get Enough Sleep
A lack of sleep can cause a sufferer to become irritable and overwhelmed by stress and worry. Avoid this by getting at least the recommended 7-8 hours every night. Having trouble falling asleep at night? Try relaxing with a warm bath or reading a book before bedtime, and avoid electronic devices.
Don’t Smoke
Smoking cigarettes increases sensitivity to and can heighten levels of anxiety in certain people. Seek additional help from a medical professional if you are having trouble quitting smoking on your own. They may prescribe medication that can make the process easier for you.
Keep Calm and Carry On
Life happens and stress can start to take over; when this happens, don’t let it get the best of you. Stress management is key. Learning how to manage your stress will help keep anxiety at bay. Be mindful of your thought patterns, and be sure to question the negative or repetitive thoughts that may be fueling your anxiety. You can also try different types of relaxing movements to help keep calm. Try yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises to calm your mind and body.
